Born in Munich, West Germany, to Gerhard Florian "Jerry" Zimmermann, a master sergeant in the US army and Sharon, a social worker, Jeri grew up with her older brother called Mark. Based on their father's career, they spent their early years in various army posts in places such as Kansas, Texas, Georgia, Hawaii, and Maryland. After Mr. Zimmermann retired when Jeri Lynn was 11 years old, they permanently resided in Paducah, Kentucky where she eventually graduated in 1986 from Lone Oak High School.

After high school, actress Jeri Ryan joined Northwestern University as a National Merit Scholar, and she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre in 1990. While undertaking her higher education studies, she participated in the 6th Miss Northwestern Alpha Delta Phi pageant, and became Miss Illinois in 1989. She took part in the Miss America pageant in 1990 although she did not win (emerged 3rd runners up), and also participated in a swimsuit competition.

Immediately after finishing college, Jeri Lynn Ryan moved to Los Angeles for an acting career and got her first role as Pam in the sitcom “Who’s the Boss?” After a couple of small roles, she got her first major gig in Dark Skies in the role of an extra-terrestrial investigator called Juliet Stuart. Despite the cancellation of the show, the science-fiction genre started growing in popularity.
